New super-meth floods Germany and Europe
Crystal meth was never a nationwide problem in Germany – except in some regions near the Czech border, the drug was almost nowhere readily available or truly widespread. While the threat posed by the drug was occasionally sensationalized in the media, the real horror stories came almost exclusively from the USA and Southeast Asia. Until now. There are increasing signs that meth is becoming more and more popular in cities from Barcelona to Berlin.
Organized criminal gangs in the Netherlands are now producing the drug in large quantities, and it is more readily available on the continent than ever before – and simultaneously more potent. From 2010 to 2020, the amount of methamphetamine seized in the EU increased by 477 percent.
In this episode, we travel across Germany to trace how crystal meth from Dutch superlabs is taking the country by storm. The new customers range from sex workers and techno and hardtekk partygoers to people who were bored during the COVID lockdowns and stumbled upon meth.
