In 2003 in between the releases of The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, The Wachoskis would produce an animated anthology series called the Animatrix. Made up of 9 short stories animated by several Japanese studios, the compilation served to expand the world of The Matrix, exploring the history between humans and machines, what led to their war and fleshing out some minor characters from the movies.
