• Surgery is the main treatment for most of bone cancer.
• The main goal is to remove all cancer cells.
• Important to confirm, there should be no cancer cells edge of the tissues, after the surgery.
There are three type of Surgery.
• Limb salvage surgery,
• Amputation,
• Reconstructive surgery,
Limb Salvage Surgery
• All cancer cells are removed without removing your limb. This is called limb salvage surgery.
• Surgery is very complex, because surgeon should remove entire tumor without damaging nearby tendons, nerves and vessels. Therefore surgeon should have special skills and experience.
• Limb salvage surgery is not always possible.
• Sometimes this surgery cause painful in limb or limb can’t be used. Then amputation is the best option.
• Bone grafts or end prosthesis is used to replace the bone that lost.
• End prosthesis is made of metal or other materials.
• If the bone graft or end prosthesis is infected, loose or broken, further surgery could be done.
• After limb salvage surgery, patient should participate rehabilitation program to learn step by step use of limb.
Amputation
• Amputation is removal of your part or all of a limb.
• Amputation is done now a days, if the limb salvage surgery is not possible.
• According to MRI scan and Pathologist’s examination, Surgeon decides location of the limb to be cut.
• After surgery, a person should learn how to use the artificial limb (prosthesis) in rehabilitation.
• Proper physical therapy should be carried out after the surgery.
Reconstructive Surgery.
• Surgery can be done to re-build or re-construct a new limb, after the amputation.
• If the leg amputated at mid-thigh, A prosthesis with lower leg are used to make new leg.
• If the bone cancer located upper arm, tumor removed and lower arm attached again.
