In 2023, Polish and American archaeologists found a 71-centimeter-tall Buddha statue carved from Greek marble in the courtyard of an Egyptian temple dedicated to Isis—in a Red Sea port buried under sand for centuries.

It wasn't the only piece. Alongside it: a Sanskrit inscription dated with the name of a Roman emperor, and coins from a 2nd-century Indian kingdom. All in the same place.

An Indian merchant commissioned a statue of his god using Greek marble in an Egyptian port. An Egyptian craftsman learned to sculpt Buddha because someone asked him to. And they left it in the courtyard of the Temple of Isis, alongside offerings from people who worshipped entirely different gods.

This is not an archaeological curiosity. It is physical proof that the ancient world was far more connected than history books suggest.
