I tested the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro side by side on real hikes to see which one handles satellite messaging better when you're completely off the grid. Both watches can now send and receive messages without a phone or cell signal, but they work differently. The Apple Watch only switches to satellite when both your iPhone and watch are offline. If your phone connects to something like T-Mobile's Starlink network, that counts as online and the watch won't use satellite. The Garmin operates independently and doesn't rely on a phone at all. I compare coverage areas, ease of use, message delivery times, and whether these features are worth the cost over a dedicated device like an inReach.
