bipolar funk - Dobby
This was an improvisational jam I recoded to practice with. I enjoyed it a lot so I thought I would post the video. I called it bipolar funk because it jumps between major and minor keys often, and really explains how I feel about this summer so far. The swings in weather, the craziness with the pandemic, but still a lot of amazing times.
I’m trying hard recently to be a more honest player, so everything I post from this point forward will be unedited. I recorded bass first just jamming an idea I had, not a very original one, but one I enjoyed it still. I have never played bongos before and my friend left a set here, so I played those next. I looped those two takes once and recorded a guitar part over top.
Does anyone else recorded little mini rough songs like this as a practice tool? I’d love to see what other people are working on. If anyone is curious the gear I use to record it is below.
Guitar: VOXAC30, TCelectronics hyper gravity, AUDIX angled at the dust cap, SHURE SM7B at the edge of the speaker and back a few inchs
Bongos, SM7B close, SM58 as an overhead (is that dumb? I don’t have a clue, sounded okay)
Bass: DI with guitar Rig (puke, but I have no bass amp, so sorry.)
Recorded with a Presonus AUDIOBOX USB
Mixing (if you can call it that, I suck): Light EQ, some noise gates on certain tracks, compression on the bass and bongos, a maximizer. For the most part I tried to keep it fairly true to the mic and DI sound.
