Serum Bass Inspired By Skeptical (Sinkhole Remix)
This was requested a few times! The bass from Skeptical's remix of the Mefjus tune Sinkhole.
I built a little example tune, using a recreation of the main bass that I made in Serum. The percussion and drums are all very short samples, sometimes enveloped further, and the atmospherics like pads, strings, reverse sweeps etc are all grouped into delays, reverb and a compressor to thicken them up a little.
The main bass uses similar FM techniques to some previous videos (such as the Foghorn bass), which create a rich texture - and then we create some movement with pre-distortion filtering, and then some EQ/filtering after the distortion as well. A little bit of hyper/dimension before the distortion helps give it some stereo width as well.
The real "key" to the sound is the movement in the low-mids from the EQ/filters after the distortion - they cause additional movement which really pops the sound out.
In the later section of the video I walk through making a similar sound from scratch, to show step-by-step how to build up something similar (rather than just turning modules off and talking about them :) ).
