In Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., American architect George Bergstrom designed the structure built by builder John McShain.
The Pentagon wants to increase the range of its lunar satellites by tens of thousands of kilometers. To do so, it is creating a high-tech "nuclear thermal propulsion" engine driven by atomic energy. The military aims to deploy maneuverable satellites into "cislunar" space, the vast distance between the Earth and the moon before China sends its spacecraft there.
The Pentagon is the world's largest office building, with approximately 6.5 million square feet of floor area, of which 3.7 million square feet are used as offices. There are 23,000 military and civilian employees in the Pentagon, as well as 3,000 non-defense support personnel. It features five sides, five above-ground stories, two underground levels, and five ring corridors per story, with a total length of 17.5 kilometers. The center five-acre pentagonal plaza was dubbed "ground zero" on the notion that it would be a primary target in a nuclear war.
