After the death of Vladimir the Red, his eldest son, Dmitry, became Prince of Moscow at the age of nine. Metropolitan Alexei and Tysyatsky Vasily Velyaminov became his guardians and assistants. After several attempts, they obtained a charter for the Grand Duchy of Vladimir from yet another Horde khan. Vladimir was only captured by force, defeating the Suzdal Prince Dmitry Konstantinovich. He later became an ally and even gave his daughter Evdokia in marriage to Dmitry Ivanovich. In 1366, a fire broke out in Moscow, destroying the oak Kremlin, and Dmitry built a stone one. During the Muscovite-Lithuanian War, Prince Olgerd failed to capture it three times. In 1374, Dmitry stopped paying tribute to the ruler of the Horde, Mamai. In 1378, Mamai sent an army under Murza Begish against Dmitry, but Dmitry defeated them at the Vozha River. Two years later, Mamai comes to punish Dmitry himself.
