During the last destination Normandy on the way home summer wdc72 road trip we took the opportunity to visit Mont-Saint-Michel. Incredibly beautiful place, recommended if you haven't been here.
Info:
From the beginning, the monastery was a simple chapel that the parish priest St. Aubert built on the top of the mountain in 708. According to legend, he was told by the archangel Michael (French: Saint Michel) in a dream that he would build a monastery on that peninsula, but when Aubert woke up in the morning, he thought it had all been an imagination. The angel returned to him in his sleep a few days later and asked why Aubert did not build a monastery, but Aubert nevertheless believed that he was only imagining the angel. Mikael therefore came back to Aubert a third time and then put his thumb against Aubert's forehead, leaving a hole in the forehead bone. Aubert was thus convinced and began his work on building the monastery the very next morning. Aubert's head with the hole for the angel's thumb still exists today and can be seen in a nearby church. Today there is a cast gold statue at the top of the monastery's highest tower representing the angel Michael.
