In this new episode of UPsalute dedicated to men's health, we discuss Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) with Dr. Massimiliano Timpano, a specialist in urology and Medical Director at MediCare, Turin.
What is BPH?
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) refers to an enlargement of the prostate that occurs during a second growth phase. The acronym BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) is often used to refer to BPH.
In many men, the normal enlargement of the gland creates an obstruction and thus leads to urinary symptoms (such as a weak stream, the feeling of not emptying completely, the need to go to the bathroom frequently, or the need to get up at night).
BPH is a benign condition. This means it is not cancer. However, BPH and cancer can occur simultaneously, as prostate cancer and BPH affect different sites of the prostate gland. Furthermore, urinary problems can progress and worsen (leading to the inability to empty the bladder or, in more extreme cases, kidney failure); these are some of the reasons why it's necessary to undergo specialized urological examinations starting at age 45-50. Prostate problems negatively impact the quality of life of those affected and can also affect sexual activity in men.
Let's find out how it's treated with Dr. Massimiliano Timpano in this content!
