An ultralight small aircraft piloted by a female pilot with dual Belgian-British nationality arrived at an airport in western Belgium on 20 January, successfully completing a solo round-the-world flight that lasted approximately five months.
According to local media and other sources, she is 19 years old, making her the youngest woman to fly solo around the world.

On 20 January 2022, 19-year-old Zara Rutherford landed at Flanders International Airport in Belgium, becoming the youngest woman to make a solo round-the-world flight. But this is not the only accomplishment. Another is that the flight was made in a new category of aircraft known as an 'LSA' (light sports aircraft).
The aircraft used for the record was the 'Shark Aero', a high-performance LSA from Slovakia. The aircraft was produced in two versions: a fixed-leg version as an American-standard LSA and a retracted-leg version as a European-standard LSA with no speed limitations, the latter being characterised by its superior speed performance.
The fuselage is constructed almost entirely from carbon fibre composite material, and both the main and tail wings are aerodynamically refined, with rounded wingtips. Although the engine output is only 100 hp, the European model with retractable legs has a cruising speed of 250 km/h and a maximum speed of 300 km/h.
In addition, Rotax engines can be fuelled with automotive fuel, which means they can be refuelled at airports where aviation petrol is not available. This ability to use car fuel was probably an important factor in planning and achieving the round-the-world flight.
Zara's round-the-world flight will start westbound from Belgium on 21 August 2021. The route takes in the UK, Iceland and Greenland, crossing the Atlantic Ocean to Canada. It then heads south along the east coast of the USA to Colombia via the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands. From there, the route continues northwards along the west coast of the USA, this time via Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico. From Alaska, it crossed the Bering Sea into eastern Russia.
From Russia, the plan was to go via China to South-East Asia, but that route was abandoned as China had imposed strict entry conditions due to the new corona outbreak. From Vladivostok, the aircraft flew over the Sea of Japan and landed in South Korea. It then went to Indonesia via Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore, and from there flew over the Indian Ocean to India via Sri Lanka.
In India, the aircraft flew north along the west coast and again over the ocean to Egypt via the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Then, from Alexandria, Egypt, the aircraft travelled across the Mediterranean Sea to Crete.
From there, it flies via Bulgaria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic to Frankfurt, Germany. She then flew all the way to Belgium, and on 20 January 2022, at the age of 19, she became the youngest woman to make a solo round-the-world flight.
Incidentally, the youngest solo round-the-world flight by a man was completed by British national Travis Ludlow in 2021, at the age of 18, using a diesel-powered Cessna 172.
Zara has reported no aircraft malfunctions during his round-the-world flight, although he has been stranded during the course of the flight due to weather conditions and travel procedures. In other words, this round-the-world flight is a record that proves the reliability and safety of the LSA.
The LSA is not only characterised by its flight performance thanks to the latest aerodynamic design. The cockpit is equipped with a small but sophisticated on-screen instrument display and is capable of precise navigation. In fact, Zara's flight paths have included numerous offshore flights lasting four to five hours without incident. This is another testament to the system's high reliability and operability.
The Zara received a warm welcome in many countries, and in Saudi Arabia it was even received by royalty and prominent pilots. It is unfortunate that the Zara did not fly through Japan in the Far East, but this is partly due to the fact that the LSA is not recognised as an aircraft in Japan. If Japan had recognised LSA flights on the same basis as Europe, the US and other countries, Zara would probably have stopped over in Japan.
Worldwide, the number of LSAs continues to grow at a rate of approximately 1,500 aircraft each year. It is hoped that LSAs, which have proven their reliability and safety as well as excellent flight performance, will be institutionalised in Japan as soon as possible.
