The City of Melbourne is has opened a new library and family services community facility located at the corner of Queen and Therry streets.
Located opposite the Queen Victoria Market (QVM) the library will operate over three levels totalling 3,000m2, including a large 960m2 outdoor terrace. The library will offer innovative programming and state of the art creative technology, activating community spaces and challenging ideas of a traditional library.
A family services centre is incorporated into the building and will provide a parent room, playgroup room, secure outdoor play area, as well as child health immunisation, family support and counselling and parenting services
It will also feature a dedicated floor of the library for children and families, study and computer areas, reading room and events space, a creative makerspace, two sound studios and bookable meeting rooms.
The library collection features around 30,000 items: 22,000 books in our adult collection, and 8,000 books in our children’s collection. The collection is community-driven. Community consultation took place in early 2022 and again mid-2023 and informed our purchasing decisions to ensure the collection meets community needs.
