Watching the people you grew up with go through painful grown-up problems is strange. It brings into the clear focus the fact that life is full of surprises at best, and brutally unfair at worst.
I performed this for the first time at the PDX Vox spring song salon, a gathering of singers who share and talk about their latest work.
Inhabiting the same blank slate
Tearing into a brand new day
What will it bring?
Your guess is as good as mine
Imagining the same full plate
Chasing it down unfamiliar streets
What could go wrong?
Your guess is as good as mine.
Wasn’t it clear?
Wasn’t that clear
Then. Then.
Out of the gate we propelled off to victory
Now we both shake our heavy heads, from what we’ve seen
Everyone falls, but the drop seems so far down
For those of us who stood side by side
At the starting line
Encountering the unfair game
Staring into rows of evil eyes
What does it mean?
Your guess is as good as mine
Isn’t it clear?
Isn’t that clear
Now. Now.
