Every Genjutsu Technique Explained in 21 Minutes
Demonic Flute: Phantom Sound Chains
Phantom Sound Chains is one of the notable illusion techniques in the Naruto world, used during the battle between Tayuya—one of the Sound Four from the Sound Village—and Shikamaru.
The mechanism of this technique is particularly unique. Through the sound produced by her flute, Tayuya can create a vast area of influence, causing anyone who hears the eerie melody to fall into an Illusionary Technique. Unlike typical jutsu that are limited by visual range, this technique spreads through sound waves, making it an extremely effective tool for long-range battles.

When trapped in the illusion, Shikamaru found himself in a desolate land filled with white bones, his body bound by chains from above, and experienced the horrifying sensation of his flesh melting off his bones.
Later, this technique was used again by Kabuto Yakushi after he acquired Tayuya's DNA, during his battle with the Uchiha brothers. Because Phantom Sound Chains is transmitted through sound, even Susanoo couldn’t block it. They were forced to endure terrifying visions of snakes coiling around their bodies on a floor covered in skulls. However, the technique wasn’t particularly powerful, and since they possessed the Sharingan, they could break free from the illusion with ease.
Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant

Another sound-based technique is the Toad Confrontation Chant. This high-level illusion is performed by the two great toad sages, Fukasaku and Shima.
The unique aspect of this technique lies in its complex execution. The two toad sages require a significant amount of time to perfectly harmonize their sounds. During the battle between Jiraiya and Pain, Jiraiya stalled for time to allow Fukasaku and Shima to prepare.
Once the chant begins, the sound becomes an unavoidable weapon, affecting all enemies within range, regardless of their number or skill level. In the illusion, the victims are trapped within a barrier guarded by four massive, ancient-looking samurai toads, which are highly artistic in appearance. Notably, even while the illusion is active, Jiraiya can still interact and communicate with his opponents.
