Once you're comfortable with a salary range of $65K - $110K, focusing your negotiations around an extremely profitable commission structure is where you go from a "good income" to a "dominating one". Technical sales engineers typically focus on their monthly salary and lose sight of their earning potential on the commission side.
Most of the time employers have weak commission structures, it's your job as a technical sales engineer to demand what you want, and often times the employer is willing to move away from their standard for you.
Technical Sales employers aren't out any money if you don't deliver on a massive sales increase because they don't have to pay you any commission, so oftentimes they are open to making a special arrangement with you...just get it in a written contract.
