Is the Soul Immortal? It Depends ...
When we think of the soul, most of us just assume that it, unlike the body, is intrinsically immortal. But this wasn't the opinion of many Patristic and Church Fathers. For them, the soul, like every other created thing, is contingent: it comes into being and has the potential to pass away. So immortality is a function of our relationship to God, not an intrinsic property of the soul. And this means that the souls of some people may indeed die when their bodies do.
