Have you been wondering how to up your digital painting game and even learn more about concept art? In this video I'm going to discuss my TOP 5 TIPS I've learned to improve my paintings so far as an artist and describe what the best tips for improving as a concept artists are! My goal here is to really help you learn how to get better at digital painting and even share a few digital painting tips for beginners!
TOP 5 TIPS For IMPROVING Your Digital Paintings!
Tip #1
Draw with straight lines! When you draw props ie. weapons, books, cups, mugs, or anything man made including environment props (bridges, fences, archways) use straight lines to solidify your object. This is a large mistake I see with new upcoming artists. I learned this back in school when I first started this as a hobby. Anything geometrical and man-made usually have straight lines and if your not showing that in your artwork it's going to be noticeable and apparent and the result will be lackluster and seem very amateur/unprofessional.
Tip #2
Using Color! So this is really a preference that depends on your art style. However with that being said vibrant color with high contrast (done correctly) can really bring visual interest to a piece. Now like I said it depends on your art style, because if you're a realistic painter using super vibrant color probably isn't going to pay off and work the way you intended.
Tip #3
The small, medium and large technique! Ok, so no that's probably not what its called but let me explain. The main premise of this is that when your designing something the most successful pieces will usually incorporate some large, some medium and some small design elements in their pieces. When you design something, say this book for example, you can see I started out with a very large element. The wooden cover with the stone curve protruding out from it. From there I incorporated medium elements such as the gold corner covers and the lock that keeps the book shut. Even the binding can be considered medium because while it's large it's still broken into four sections. And lastly we have out small elements which can be seen as the cracks in the wood and metal revealing weathering and character into our prop. Combining these 3 elements correctly helps create balance and once again really draw visual interest into your design.
Tip #4
Now speaking of weathering, this is a great way to help your concept or illustration seem much more professional! Adding cracks scratches and tears into armor and clothes can be really effective. Additionally, adding grease and dirt in creases can really make your piece standout. However, I do want to make this abundantly clear as well. DON'T OVER DO IT!
Tip #5
Picking your art style! Now this is arguably one of the most important tips I can give you here today. You need to decide what art style you want to work in. If the first though when I said that was "Well TJ, how am I supposed to know what I want my style to be.", "I want to work in all of them." or "I just can't choose one." Then let me help you out with that. If your just starting out or your experimenting and doing this as a hobby then I have some good news for you. Try the style that interests you the most and the one that your most comfortable with. You want to make sure your challenging yourself while still allowing yourself to achieve a result that your happy with. What I mean is that if your just starting out you probably don't want to jump straight into photo realist painting, however if drawing simple cartoons is too easy for you try meeting somewhere in the middle where you feel confident enough to proceed but will still probably need reference and maybe a tutorial here and there to make sure your improving.
Those are my 5 tips for improving your digital paintings! I hope you enjoyed them!
