A divergent plate boundary is a tectonic boundary where two lithospheric plates are moving away from each other. This movement leads to the creation of new crust as magma rises from the mantle to fill the gap between the separating plates.
Divergent plate boundaries are characterized by several key features:
Mid-Ocean Ridges: In oceanic settings, divergent boundaries often manifest as mid-ocean ridges, underwater mountain ranges that extend along the seafloor. These ridges are created as new oceanic crust forms at the boundary and gradually moves away from it.
Rift Valleys: On continents, divergent boundaries can create rift valleys. As the lithospheric plates pull apart, the Earth's crust can fracture, forming elongated depressions. Over time, these rift valleys may develop into new ocean basins if the divergence continues.
Volcanic Activity: At divergent boundaries, magma from the mantle can rise to the surface due to reduced pressure as the plates move apart. This can result in volcanic eruptions, but the eruptions are generally less explosive and produce basaltic lava.
Earthquakes: While not as intense as those at convergent boundaries, seismic activity can occur along divergent boundaries as the plates pull apart, causing stress and fractures in the Earth's crust.
Examples of divergent plate boundaries include the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the Eurasian Plate and North American Plate are moving apart, and the East African Rift System, where the African Plate is splitting into two smaller plates.
