Are Iranians losing their religion? This is a recent phenomenon that has fascinating and ironic origins, as although Iran is infamous for it's revolutionary maniacs who which set back the human rights of women and minorities centuries, the population of Iran has since had a shift away from radicalism and towards a more measured tone towards individuals of other religions. As a result, the Iranian population has become more secular over time, especially among the youth. Official statistics from the Iranian regime find that over 99% of the Iranian population identifies as Muslim (as open apostates are punished with the death penalty), but independent sources such as GAMAAN have found that a large minority, maybe even the majority of Iranians no longer identify with Islam. The truth is likely somewhere in the middle, with Iranian civilians being far more secular than most other Middle Eastern nations, instead turning towards Iranian nationalism and other historic traditions.
