Most people like happy endings - rub a dub no!
We love a hero make the good guy win - no no no!
Nobody digs the number zero. No!
Still it's the place where we all begin.

So baby we should give it up now.
Maybe we'll find a brand new way?
And maybe we should live it up now.
Live it up in our way.

Live it up - in our own way.
Give it up - for a brand new day
Give it up - in our own way
Give it up - for a brand new day

How long is a ball of string?
How the hell do we stop this thing??
How now says the holy cow???
How could we come to this place now????

Coz baby we should give it up here - find a brand you day - yeah
And maybe we can live up here in our own way - yeah

Can we give it up for a brand new day?
Can we live it up in our own way?

Shaping Ground ft Nino Birch was filmed with phone footage at the Playhouse Theatre in Mapua.
This mix is now available on our Hands In The Soul - Double A-side digi EP release available on all stores here https://xelon.ffm.to/sdubhands

Nino Birch penned the lyrics for Shaping Ground after his iconic Wellington 80's group Beat Rhythm Fashion were denied the honour of playing a Salmonella Dub tune at the NZ Music awards in 2017. This resulted in the DubSnub Stuff news articles; the Spinoff feature interview; and the end of the Spark Arena red carpeted, Vodafone sponsored TV3 music awards and Salmonella Dub politely refusing the Hall of Fame Legacy award they'd been offered that year.

When we were offered the Hall of fame legacy award mum's advice was "accept it graciously" and so we did and we tried our best to provide everything needed including choosing an influential kiwi artist to perform a Sal Dub tune on the night. We'd had a few chats and thought Problems might be a good tune for either the Clean or Beat Rhythm to perform. We'd heard both bands on student radio through our teenage years.

We knew the Clean - Hamish Kilgour (god bless) when he was working for the QE11 arts council from an office in the art centre in Otautahi. He had helped get a reference from Roger Shepherd that convinced Brendon Smythe to grant us $1000 to make our first 12 vinyl record in 1987.

2 months into the process we were working on PPNZ requests to chose and approach an iconic kiwi act to play a track at the awards when they confessed it was a bit unusual and awkward for them to have to deal with the "artist" rather than the band manager and record Label.

It was with love and respect for the development of our collective Aotearoa musical voice that we let em know that our advice is if a band can't manage themselves here then they should probably go home and live with mum until they can.

Beat Rhythm Fashion "Beings Rest Finally" got me and Dave through 4th form! Nino Birch is like our Bob Dylan of Aotearoa New Wave - and he'd rehearsed for the event.

To be fair though - how could we accept a legacy award when Split Enz and many others more influential and of the age don't have one? Bit like the golden handshake without the grandfather clock eh?

Anyhoo - we've put a positive spin on it and included Nino as co writer on 3 awesome tunes Shaping Ground, Never Too Late & World She waits. The full length version will appear on our new double digi album For All Things Alive.
