Foo Fighters is an American rock band that was formed in Seattle in 1994 by Dave Grohl, who had been the drummer for Nirvana.
The band's name is inspired by "foo fighters," a term used by Allied pilots during World War II to describe inexplicable aerial phenomena. Before releasing their debut album in 1995, Grohl recruited Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith, both former members of Sunny Day Real Estate, along with Pat Smear, who had been a touring companion in Nirvana, to complete the lineup.
The band began performing in Portland, Oregon. Goldsmith left the band during the recording of their second album in 1997, and was replaced by Taylor Hawkins as drummer. Shortly thereafter, Smear also departed.
Over the years, the band's lineup has changed, with members such as Franz Stahl, Chris Shiflett, and Pat Smear, among others. They have released several successful albums, winning multiple Grammy Awards.
After a hiatus, Foo Fighters returned with "Concrete and Gold" in 2017, exploring a fusion of musical genres. The band continued to evolve with their album "Medicine at Midnight" in 2021.
The history of Foo Fighters dates back to the time when Dave Grohl, after his time with Nirvana, decided to move forward with his own music. He recorded some songs under the name Foo Fighters and, after receiving a positive response, officially formed the band.
