#OnView “저의 작품은 하나의 음표에서 시작한다고 이야기할 수 있어요. 많은 작품들이 말 그대로 하나의 점이나 선에서 시작하지요. 그리고 이 선이 어떻게 움직이는지가 작품의 방향과 리듬을 결정하죠. 음악과 매우 비슷하다고 할 수 있어요. 레너드 번스타인은 한 때 ‘음악은 다음 음표에 관한 것이다’라고 쓰기도 했었죠. 제 작업도 마찬가지라고 볼 수 있어요. 다음에 올 음은 무엇일까요? 마치 대화가 일어나는 것과 같습니다. 저는 제가 정말로 음악을 만들고 있다고 생각해요. 다만, 소리와 공간 대신에 움직임과 공간을 활용할 뿐이지요.”—존 배

“It is like saying: it starts with one note. Literally, a lot of my pieces start somewhere in the middle of a dot or a line. It is how the line moves that dictates what direction and what kind of rhythm. They are very similar to music. Leonard Bernstein once wrote, ‘Music is about the next note.’ It is pretty much the same process for me. What is the next note? It is kind of a conversation, taking a place. I think it is much possible I am really making music. Instead of sound and space, I use movement and space.”—John Pai
