Louis Cole is one of the most unique and intense musicians around and this whole band is killing. Sam Wilkes (bass) is also quickly becoming a favorite of mine.
SIDENOTE:
When I first figured out the bass part, I was playing the verses with a C on beat two because that’s sort of what the ear expects and it makes enough melodic sense leading into the C# as a passing tone followed by the D natural—all outlining A minor pentatonic. (Also, all the vids that I’ve seen of other folks covering the bass part did the same thing, which reinforced it in my ears)
But after a week of listening to the original I suddenly realized it’s actually a B natural on beat two. So the scale is A, B, C#, D, E, F, G—like A dorian with a sharp 3, or A major with flat 5 and 6, or like an ascending D melodic minor starting from A…
Whatever you want to call it, it was a cool revelation. It's subtle but makes the bass part and composition that much hipper.
SIDENOTE 2: The verses always remind me of Lady Madonna by the Beatles
Enjoy!
