Jeffers Foundation joins forces with Orono Community Education to develop the Big Island Institute. A moderately sized island in a large lake west of Minneapolis, MN has a storied past and was made accessible by the City of Orono, MN who owns part of the island. It was decided to create a "summer institute" or environmental immersion experience for elementary age children. They would be brought there daily on a boat and there would be students from city schools as well as suburbs. The students would learn from naturalists to fish, sample water, study aquatic and earth based flora and fauna and learn about the Island history and indigenous peoples
