Vermeer light
For many years I have been attracted to Vermeer's painting. It conveys a sense of calm and surprising intimacy, where there is no action. The people in his paintings, especially women, seem almost dispassionate, bathed in a prodigious light, surrounded by mystery and poetry. They produce absolute serenity from expectant eyes, a half-born smile and a gently shaped face.
By placing the female figures against the light, he has emphasized them and established a distance between them and the background, bringing them closer to the viewer. But even in the absence of any dramatic element, the way he treats the light lends the moment an indefinable intensity, and the simplest gesture takes on a ritual solemnity.
In this photographic series I wanted to try to reconstruct that spirit, transmitted in gesture, stylism and light.
