We have been living on board our sailing boat for six years now and sail together with a cat and two dogs around the world. In today's episode, we want to share some thoughts and experiences we have had with our traveling pets during the last few years and what it actually is like to have big dogs on board. Dogs on boats are not much different to them on land but we get many questions regarding traveling with dogs or traveling with pets. Questions like what lifejacket for dogs we use or if we can give some tips for a pet friendly voyage. How to train the dog and so furth. Basco is a black Labrador Retriever and Marley a Rottweiler. Nobody knows anything about the cat. We talk about socializing the dogs before the sailing trip and how to prepare yourself and the dog for a long term journey. Dogs on sailing yachts are still dogs with all their needs. But the move to a boat is a much bigger challenge for pets than it is for people. In this video we discuss especially things that are often forgotten or not considered enough. Things like the retirement of the dog or what to do if no vet can be reached but the dog has to be put to sleep. What does it mean for the dog to spend his life on a boat and where does the dog go to the toilet? Is artificial turf or Astro turf actually a good solution for dogs business? Do we have a lifejacket for the dogs and do dogs get seasick? We tried to answer most of the questions and still focus on the underestimated details what it actually means to travel the world and sailing with pets. We try to give some insights on 6 years experience in living aboard a sailboat with dogs.

This video should not be understood as an instruction. We ourselves did not know exactly what it meant to sail with big dogs. They were already part of the family so the question did not really arise. We just want to share some thoughts and impressions after all this time with our sailing dogs. We do not believe that there is a golden guide to how to do things. But it is certainly helpful if you know in advance what you are getting into. We don't regret a second and are still a happy family with our dogs. Nevertheless there are things we would do differently today. We hope this video is not too controversial and we will hear your opinion in the comments.
