"Summer and Bird" is a Frankenstein's monster of books--borrowing pieces from Grimms' Fairy Tales, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," and even Swan Lake. The result is, like the monster, part fascinating and part unsettling. The wonderland in which sisters Summer and Bird find themselves (after their parents disappear one otherwise-innocuous morning) is magical and malevolent, enchanting and evil. It's full of strange puzzles and twisted paths. And while the telling of this story can at times be wonderful, it can also be wearying. Fans of fantasy and fairy tales will probably forge ahead, while others may find that "Summer and Bird" isn't quite compelling enough to expend the effort.
