HOW TO BOOK TRAIN TICKETS IN JAPAN
There's a JR Pass available from around AUD $490 which allows you to travel around Japan for a specified period of time (only related to JR lines). However, if you're only visiting a few cities in Japan, it might actually be cheaper to purchase train tickets individually. For example, we went from Tokyo to Kyoto to Kinosaki Onsen to Osaka for a total of $240pp by purchasing tickets individually (you'll need to research costs of trains depending on your destinations).

Tokyo to Kyoto (Shinkansen bullet train): https://smart-ex.jp/en/lp/app/?_gl=1*.... (must register online, you will get a QR code ticket)
Kyoto to Kinosaki Onsen & Kinosaki Onsen to Osaka (JR West local train): https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ti.... However, if you're booking online, you will need to pick up your physical ticket at a green machine - see more details here: https://westjr.co.jp/global/en/howto/.... Make sure you pick up your ticket in advance if you can, or at least arrive 1 hour earlier to collect your ticket because the lines can be very long! I waited in line for 40mins to collect our tickets, but luckily we didn't miss our train. Just a tip :)
