In the Secret Annex, the people in hiding could hear the Westertoren sound every fifteen minutes. Especially at night, the sound of the ringing church bells was reassuring to Anne.
'Father, Mother and Margot still can't get used to the chiming of the Westertoren clock, which tells us the time every quarter of an hour. Not me, I liked it from the start; it sounds so reassuring, especially at night.' wrote Anne Frank in her diary, 11 July 1942.

The Anne Frank House was established on 3 May 1957 in cooperation with Otto Frank, Anne Frank’s father. The Anne Frank House is an independent organisation dedicated to the preservation of the place where Anne Frank went into hiding and wrote her diary during the Second World War. The organisation brings the life story and the work of Anne Frank to the attention of as many people as possible worldwide, partly with the aim of raising awareness of the dangers of antisemitism, racism and discrimination and the importance of freedom, equal rights and democracy.
