Mari is black, but she identifies as white. The Afrikaans family adopted her after her grandmother removed her from her biological parents because they were treating her badly.
Despite being a black woman, she says she doesn't identify as black because she was raised to be white. She also talks about the social challenges of growing up in an all-white Afrikaans school as a "black" girl.
