I don’t want this to be happening
she says from her place at the top of the hill
Her little body, squinting down at me
the dogs standing fast by her side
At the foot of the hill the flames stand singing
licking and feeding off of the ground
wilted and starved by the winter
Life at the back of my hand
trotting along, casually
Time slips and fades,
into the red, into the smoke
I know things I don’t
speaking another language
I see living
coming and going
up my sleeve
One and one and one and one
The universe pulled me in once
I immediately denied it
