How I FARM MEALWORMS for My CHICKENS
Hi everybody, Scott here from Narrow Road Living. In this video, I’ll share my experience of farming mealworms over the past year. Initially, I started with 1 kilogram of mature mealworms to provide a supplemental food source for my chickens. By keeping them indoors and using multi-level containers, I managed to observe their growth through different stages, from pupae to beetles.

Throughout this journey, I encountered several challenges such as managing the transition from pupae to beetles, extreme temperatures, and ant invasions. I refined my approach by manually removing beetles and sifting the bins, which improved the process. My farm now produces around 3 kg of mealworms and 5 to 6 kg of frass monthly. We have been working on our property since 2016, transforming our barren wasteland property into a permaculture oasis. We have been building a food forest, utilising mini swales and other water harvesting techniques. Growing fruit trees and managing a raised bed vegetable garden and kitchen garden. We live on 1/3 acre in a dryland/flatland area of Victoria, Australia. Our climate is semi-arid/temperate with an average rainfall of 400mm (15in). Hardiness Zone 9b, with summer temperatures reaching upwards of 45C (113F) and as low as -3C (26.5F). We are 230km (143 miles) inland and 110 metres (361 feet) above sea level.
