Sickle cell disease screening a critical step to save lives and improve care
More than 300,000 babies globally are born every year with sickle cell disease, yet access to care remains limited across Sub-Saharan Africa, a region which carries over three quarters of the global disease burden. Routinely screening babies is a first step towards ensuring they receive the care needed to manage their illness and improve their quality of life – this is especially important because the biggest burden is carried by the most fragile population, babies, and children.
Fortunately for Kadden, his case was detected early due to screening initiated by his mother, Rosalind, when he was 4 months old. Kadden is now 13 years old and is a success story of a patient living with a well-managed sickle cell condition.
