Interview with Quantum Physicist Dr. Jon D’Emidio on the weirdness of quantum mechanics, its origins, quantum entanglement, quantum spin, and the complexity required to simulate a many-particle quantum system on a computer. We begin with an “explain like I’m five” explanation of the most basic building blocks of quantum theory and then progressively build on the fundamentals required for understanding Jon’s research on large-scale quantum systems using Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations. We also discuss the current status of quantum computing, and how it is changing the landscape of quantum research. We conclude with a discussion on the ever-growing sphere of quantum pseudoscience and methods for distinguishing between legitimate quantum research and ‘quantum woo.’

Dr. Jon D’Emidio is an active quantum physicist at Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) in San Sebastian, Spain. Jon studies critical phase phenomena related to quantum many-body systems. Jon’s work has appeared multiple times in Physics Review Letters (https://journals.aps.org/prl/), and his most recent publication entitled “Universal Features of Entanglement Entropy in the Honeycomb Hubbard Model” was highlighted by the editors of PRL as a featured article.
Previously, Jon held a post-doctoral fellowship at Ecole Polytechnique in Lausanne, Switzerland, and he completed his Ph.D. in theoretical condensed matter physics at the University of Kentucky in 2017.
By the end of this video, you’ll have a better understanding of the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, entanglement, methods for simulating quantum many-body systems, and the current status and challenges of quantum computing.

A few corrections to some spoken inaccuracies have been brought to my attention:
1) It was incorrectly stated photons have spin 0. Photons are considered spin-1 gauge bosons. The point remains the same, that is, the spin of photons is distinct from that of electrons.
2) It was stated that the Stern-Gerlach experiment used Nickel atoms. The Stern-Gerlach experiment was conducted using Silver atoms. Here's an excellent video on the Stern-Gerlach experiment:
