This was the letter written by Albert Einstein (drafted by Leo Szilard) informing President Franklin D. Roosevelt of the enormous threat a nuclear bomb posed on the Allies in World War II. German scientists Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann discovered nuclear fission in December of 1938, and the Nazis had already seized mines in Czechoslovakia containing vast quantities of uranium - the fissile material required for building a bomb. This letter to FDR is what set off the alarm bells that would eventually lead to the formation of The Manhattan Project. Robert Oppenheimer was eventually assigned as the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, the final assembly and design site of the first atomic bomb.
