Beginning in the mid-1980s, imprisonment became mortally dangerous for honest thieves. Any sentence was tantamount to a death sentence. The most high-profile reprisal, which marked the beginning of a string of mysterious deaths of traditionalist thieves, was the brutal murder of Brilliant, who was beaten to death in Solikamsk by corrupt collaborators of the administration, among the reformed prisoners. It is believed that an unspoken order to exterminate old thieves by any means necessary came from the very top. As a result, within a few years, such prominent thieves as Cheboksary, Kaigorod, Gorlyshko, Yuri Palych, Slavka Ryzhiy, Karzuby, Chakhotka, Mishka Psikh, Khozayka, Ivan Khlyust, Kostya Grozin, Gorbaty, and many, many others passed away in prison. Prison doctors played a significant role in this, either failing to provide timely medical care to thieves or finishing off their prestigious patients on the operating table.
