Beginning in the mid-1980s, imprisonment became mortally dangerous for honest thieves. Any sentence was tantamount to a death sentence. The most high-profile reprisal, which marked the beginning of a string of mysterious deaths of traditionalist thieves, was the brutal murder of Brilliant, who was beaten to death in Solikamsk by corrupt collaborators of the administration, among the reformed prisoners.
