World War II
On 1 September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. This is the military action that really begins World War II. World War II is the most devastating conflict mankind has ever known.
But to understand how the situation got to this point, we must go back years, at least until the end of World War I. The Treaty of Versailles had ended the Great War, and Germany had been badly decimated after losing territory and being ordered to pay disproportionate compensation to the victors.
