The figure of Napoleon Bonaparte emerged after the French Revolution. He ended up taking absolute power, crowning himself emperor and embarking his country on an expansionist spiral: the Napoleonic Wars.
Beyond the military sphere, as a ruler, Napoleon forced Europe to enter the modern era and included in his policies some of the ideas arising from the Enlightenment. He promoted a new civil code, which, among other things, prohibited privileges based on birth, established meritocracy in the civil service and advocated religious freedom.
