"On July 5th, 2023, Sara and her family experienced a tragic fire in their Gilbert home. The cause: fireworks that had been set off the night before that were not properly disposed of. These fireworks managed to ignite her garbage can, and the flames crept their way into the attic of her house. Sara and her family managed to escape the fire unharmed, but sadly, one of their pets did not make it out of the house. As a result, they were forced to relocate until their home is reconstructed to a livable condition. A somber reminder to take every extra precaution, this incident acts as a learning device to all community residents; just a few extra steps can make the difference between a fun-filled holiday celebration, or a life-altering disaster."
The Gilbert Fire Department shares tips and precautions to make sure that fireworks are properly extinguished, in an effort to help the community avoid a misfortune such as this one:
Soak used fireworks in a bucket of cool water for at least 24 hours
Wrap the soaked fireworks in plastic bags
Place the soaked, wrapped fireworks in your trash (not recycling) bin
Keep your trash bin out of your garage and at least 3 feet away from your home
