The Ngorongoro Crater in northern Tanzania is the world's largest volcano caldera that remains mostly intact. Ngorongoro is one of the giant unbroken calderas that isn't a lake. It is 19 km wide and covers 264 sq km.
Its steep walls rise from 400m to 610m, and the open grasslands, swamps, and acacia woodland on the crater floor serve as the stage for a unique natural drama as prey and predators graze and stalk through them. The ancient caldera is almost 3 million years old and is now home to one of the most beautiful places on earth for wildlife.
The Ngorongoro Crater is the best place in East Africa to see the "Big Five" animals. The Ngorongoro Crater and the highlands comprise Africa's most beautiful areas.
Beautiful volcanic craters surround some of Africa's most fertile and rich grazing areas. Ngorongoro is one of the most famous safari destinations on the continent and for good reason. It's a great way to start your African safari adventure.
Over 30,000 animals live in this vast cauldron, made when a volcano collapsed about 3 million years ago. There's no better place in Tanzania to see animals if you have little time.
Within the steep walls of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, big cats and spotted hyenas hunt herbivores in the grasslands, giant-tusked elephants patrol the forests, and salmon-colored flamingos flock to the algae-filled waters of Lake Magadi. Most wanted are sightings of endangered black rhinos, which do well in this fertile volcanic basin.
The crater is part of the larger Ngorongoro Conservation area, where there are tented camps, farmhouse coffee plantations, and hilltop lodges, some right on the crater's edge. Here, you can spend your days going on game drives on the floor of holes and having picnics in front of waterholes home to more than 500 species of rainbow birds.
