The Serengeti is one of Africa's most famous national parks, with some of the best wildlife viewing in the world. The park was created in 1952 and is larger than Connecticut. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and covers 5,700 square miles.
Most people's dreams of an African safari include the Serengeti, its many animals, vast golden plains dotted with thorny umbrella acacia, kopje, sausage trees, and rivers full of crocodiles and hippos.
The main thing to see here is the wildlife. The Great Migration is the movement of over a million animals in a circle across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. It is one of the most popular wildlife and nature experiences and was chosen as one of Africa's Seven Natural Wonders.
Wildebeest migrate in endless columns, accompanied by a vast supporting cast, all pursuing grass and water. After giving birth in the southern part of Tanzania's Serengeti, near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the animals travel through the Serengeti in a clockwise direction to the Masai Mara in Kenya and then back to Tanzania near the end of the year.
Along the way, there is always high drama as predators kill thousands of animals, and thousands more are born to replace them and keep the life cycle going.
Even without the Great Migration, the park has the highest number of lions globally and is home to all Big Five animals and almost 500 bird species.
Other predators include the cheetah, hyena, jackals, African golden wolf, honey badger, serval, and African wild dog. Because the park is so open, you have a good chance of seeing most of the predator species.
When planning your trip to this fantastic place, you should think about how big it is and what time of day you want to go to see it at its best. In addition to the traditional game drives during the day, you could also go on walking safaris, night drives, or even look at this beautiful ecosystem from a horse, hot air balloon, or plane!
Visiting a Maasai village or learning about the significant paleoanthropological finds at Oldupai Gorge are two cultural and educational experiences that might enrich a trip to this area.
