How to split your emails to read and unread in Gmail / How To Separate Emails To Read and Unread In Gmail
1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
2. To configure your inbox, go to the top right, then click Settings.
3. Click on the inbox label
4. In the "Inbox type" section, select Unread first.
5. And click Save Changes at the bottom.

It solves this question- I can no longer get my inbox to separate 'read' and 'unread' messages. How do I do that?
Click the Gear, go to Settings, click Inbox. Then the very first thing at the top is Inbox type, You choose Unread first and save.

That fixed it and put it back to normal.
