KFC's Love Story With Indian Youth | KFC Documentary

Kentucky Fried Chicken, which is popularly known as KFC, headquartered in Louisville, is a fast-food chain for its very popular fried chicken. It is the world’s second-largest restaurant chain after McDonald’s. And today, we’ll be talking about how Indians fell in love with the American fast-food chain, KFC.

With more than 18,000 outlets in over 100 countries and more than 12 million customers are served at KFC outlets around the world. KFC is actually one of the subsidiaries of Yum!

Just like other countries, India opened its economy in 1991 and welcomed foriegn brands, and one of the brands that came in was KFC in 1995. Interestingly, their first outlet was strategically placed in a tourist location in Bangalore, this ensured that they got foot traffic from foreigners who were already aware of the brands.

Also, their secret is that they modified their menu according to Indian taste and became popular and grew to 380+ outlets today, now remember here, modifying menu according to indian taste is something that we have discussed before as well while discussing the Failure of Starbucks in India. Though starbucks also tried it’s best to bring in indian stuff on the plate but it somehow didn’t pass in the test of winning hearts, that’s where KFC is staying two steps ahead.

However, KFC has faced a lot of challenges since its entry into India and has faced a lot of controversies ever since. Being the first foreign fast-food restaurant to make its entry in India, KFC has faced many protests during the initial stages. Several Indians thought that the Western culture would sweep into the minds of Indians. The rage and protests increased so much that KFC outlets demanded a police van be parked outside for nearly a year.

KFC has faced extreme demonstrations by an animal rights advocacy group, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), since the late 1990s. PETA accused KFC of chicken abuse and released a video showing bird ill-treatment at KFC's poultry farms. KFC planned a major expansion program in India, however, undeterred by the protests by PETA and other animal rights organizations. The famous restaurant chain did not lose its hope even after facing multiple rejections from consumers and got its roots strong in the Indian market. It didn’t choose to eliminate its operation rather it analyzed the problems faced by it and solved them professionally.

Thus, until 2004 KFC had only one controlled outlet in India. Later on, the food brand extended its operations across India as the single outlet began making money, and today, KFC outlets can be found in a variety of cities.

Indians prefer chicken over other forms of meat. And KFC was all about chicken, whereas MCd and burger kings relied on options of other meats and beef. Now when this brand set up their store in india, people were more attracted towards a brand that was serving them the meat of their choice.
Much like other countries, Indians are fond of street food and youth loves the concept of street food. So, when the foreign brand offers their products, in a sit down restaurant, at cheap prices, Indian youth loved this concept.

Time is the real factor that played a vital role in KFC’s success. Generally, when people visit restaurants, they want to get their orders as soon as possible. Sandler's idea was to use the pressure cooker to make food ready to eat faster. It also makes foods tastier and more hygienic. The secret recipe of fried chicken was made by Colonel Sanders only. Thus, it is the copyright of the KFC franchise.
