TELESIN Car Mount Suction Cup Outside Inside Windshield Test and Review
My first thoughts on the TELESIN suction cup mount upon unboxing it was that for the price the quality seemed good. If you were only to use this mount on the interior windshield it would probably do fine.
Instead of my music blasting and talking on the radio with the group of us driving, I wanted to hear exhaust noise instead. So for this reason I was specifically looking for a mount rated for outside of car use and I went with the TELESIN mount because it was listed as "outside inside windshield"
For context and this mount lasted on my windshield from Raleigh to VIR (Alton, VA). Roughly an hour and a half and 64 miles.
In my error I had placed the mount on the top of the windshield but still in the path of the wipers. When we hit light rain I turned on the wipers for one pass then realizing my mistake turning them back off.
The mount was not affected by the single pass of the wiper blades and I continued on. Upon reaching VIR I did remove the mount from the windshield moving it to a clean painted section of the roof.
We were there to spectate a race (not participate) so this was not track tested.
Where this video begins is after leaving VIR. I pass the blue Jeep Grand Cherokee at about 70mph and resume a normal speed of 55 - 60 mph behind the white Ford Focus. After a short time of following the Focus the suction cup detaches from the roof scratching it and the trunk lit before rolling under the Jeep (possibility hitting the under side of their front bumper) and coming to rest on the side of the road.
I immediately heard/saw this and turned around in the first gas station I saw. The Jeep followed me in and much to my surprise the driver was not angry but just wanted to make sure I knew I had lost my camera. I thanked him and apologized before leaving to finding a driveway to pull off in to go recover the camera.
The whole situation could have been a lot worse and this was my life lesson on why you can't cheap out on camera mounts.
The camera, is a Akaso Brave 4 contained in its included water proof case so had this happened somewhere that would have forced me to abandon it I wouldn't have been out an arm and leg.
This was also an equipment test a week before our Back of the Dragon trip which is what I ultimately bought this set up for so I'm glad I tested the equipment when I did because there would have been no recovering the camera on that road. It's not worth my life.
Back to the mount, it had retained some damage from its roll on the road so it would no longer remain stuck to the inside of the windshield by the time I really needed it.
I ended up using one of the free sticky mounts that came in the box with the camera to get the footage I ended.
TLDR: This mount is fine for interior use only, keep the suction cup and mounting surface clean and don't expose it to too much heat on hot days. I will not be reordering this brand.
