►The crankshaft must stick out of the front of an engine so that there's a spot for the hub to mount. A specialized seal allows that without letting oil pass, but it can go bad. A leaky front crankshaft seal on the N14 engine isn't uncommon, so if you see oil around the front of the engine, there's a good chance it's this seal.
Replacing your front crankshaft seal requires a couple of funky sockets, but nothing else is too challenging. Space can sometimes be tight, working in the passenger's wheel well, but access is good. Set aside a couple of hours, and you should have it replaced with relative ease.
In this video, Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro's Professional DIYer, replaces the front crankshaft seal on an R56 MINI Cooper.
