Today, we take a drive around the Gordie Howe Bridge Project on the neighbouring roads of Sandwich Street and Broadway Avenue.
This monumental project is set to transform the connectivity between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, providing a vital link for trade and travel.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge, named after the legendary Canadian hockey player, is a cable-stayed bridge that spans the Detroit River. This bridge is a marvel of modern engineering but also a symbol of the strong ties between Canada and the United States. The bridge is to be completed by the fall of 2025, and it will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America, measuring approximately 2,798 feet in length.
In June, workers successfully linked the U.S. and Canadian sides of the bridge.
The focus has shifted to finalizing the construction at the ports of entry. Sandwich Street, a key road in Windsor, is undergoing a complete reconstruction. This project, funded through the Gordie Howe International Bridge initiative, aims to enhance the streetscape and improve traffic flow. The reconstruction includes asphalt paving, new bicycle lanes, and enhanced sidewalks. Where Sandwich Street meets the Ojibway Parkway, it veers off to continue around the Gordie Howe Bridge Project. We get a different perspective from ground level, offering a better concept of the magnitude of this incredible project.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project is not just about infrastructure; it's about community development. Local businesses and neighborhoods are set to benefit from the increased connectivity and improved infrastructure. For example, a food truck initiative on the Detroit side aims to expand and improve the neighborhood near the bridge, adding to the vibrancy of the area. I expect we will see enhancements on the Canadian side develop as well as things move forward.
Broadway Avenue is another important road neighbouring the development. Where Sandwich Street terminates, just past the 401 overpass and entrance into the Gordie Howe Bridge, Broadway continues to hug the plaza on the Gordie Howe Bridge property. Currently Broadway Avenue terminates once we reach the road deck of the project. However, Broadway will continue under the road deck connecting to Prospect Street to complete the circle around the bridge plaza.
As we look forward to its completion in 2025, the ongoing work on the bridge, plaza, and surrounding community infrastructure like Sandwich Street will continue to make significant progress.
Thank you for joining us on ride around the Gordie Howe Bridge Plaza. Stay tuned for more news and developments on this transformative project. Please like and subscribe. This is Bob Jones and I will see you in the next video.
