DIY 2 Bucket Potato Growing System for Small Spaces.
Materials Needed:
2 identical food-grade buckets (5-gallon recommended)
1/2 inch drill bit
Jigsaw
Potting soil
Seed potatoes
Mulch or straw
Optional: landscape fabric or mesh screen
Step-by-Step Construction:
Bucket 1 (Bottom Bucket):
Drill 1/2 inch drainage holes in the bottom
Optional: Cover drainage holes with landscape fabric to prevent soil loss
Add 4-6 inches of organic mulch or straw at the bottom for drainage
This bucket collects excess water and provides air circulation
Bucket 2 (Top Bucket):
Use jigsaw to cut large access panels on the sides
These panels allow you to harvest potatoes without removing all the soil
Ensure cut edges are smooth to prevent injury
Size panels about 4-6 inches wide, leaving structural integrity
Planting Process:
1. Fill second bucket with high-quality potting soil
2. Plant seed potato pieces (2-inch chunks with eyes) about 4 inches deep
3. Space potato pieces 6-8 inches apart
4. Cover with 3-4 inches of soil
5. Place bucket 2 inside bucket 1
Growing Tips:
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
Place in sunny location (6-8 hours direct sunlight)
Add soil/mulch as plants grow (hilling)
Harvest when plants die back or through side panels
Advantages of 2-Bucket System:
Space-efficient
Easy drainage
Simple harvesting
Portable
Great for apartments/small spaces
