Each of Beethoven’s 5 piano concertos take us to a distinct place if the first 2 piano concertos have the spirit of Mozart hanging over them, The 3rd is a backward glance to Mozart. The 5th, aka the “Emperor" piano concerto, comes to life with monumentality and heroism, is unmistakably Beethoven. In between is the often overlooked Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, in which Beethoven takes us to a magical world of shimmering colors

This piano concerto marks the beginning of Beethoven 's second period. It once and for all shakes itself loose from the 18th century . It breaks away from the conventional structure of classical piano concertos of its time. Beethoven expands the traditional boundaries of the genre, introducing new structural elements and innovative orchestration.
