Sky forecast for astrophotographers September 2024 // Sky surveys explained
September, like August, is one of the best months for astrophotography. The nights are getting longer again, the weather is often stable, and the Milky Way, with its numerous nebulae, towers high in the sky. Galaxies also return to visibility, making September a particularly exciting month for astrophotographers.
Another reason to celebrate: Reader submissions set a new record this month – an incredible 102 images were submitted! Many thanks to everyone who sent in their fantastic photos!
In this sky preview, I'm taking a slightly different approach. There's no classic "object of the month." Instead, I'm focusing on an important topic: sky surveys, such as the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS), and their significance for planning our shoots. These data sources are indispensable for discovering hidden treasures in the sky.
The standard objects in the constellations Pegasus, Lacerta, and Cepheus also offer many interesting opportunities for astrophotographers in September. Furthermore, some exotic objects are particularly exciting again, offering unique challenges and opportunities.
Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro in astrophotography – there's something for everyone in September.
